Just watched this really great PBS documentary about the Jonestown massacre (which is where the footage for the great music video by the band Cults comes from, above). I strongly suggest everyone check it out (google video).

One of the things that is very striking at the beginning is how moving and agreeable his original message was: equality among races, equality among classes, following jesus’s message of selling your possessions and leading a virtuous life, etc.
Then it gets really bizarre, with Jim (the leader of The People’s Temple), saying that everyone is a homosexual, except for himself, and that sex is just a distraction from doing actual good in the world… and the fact that he was having sex with a lot of the people, both men and women.

Then the paranoia…
